Friday, April 30th, 2010. 2:31 P.M. on a drizzly spring afternoon in the small town of Rosethorne, Virginia. With a population of only 26,000, the city center was nothing if not quaint, and the people generally reflected that mindset.
School was just letting out. Parents were picking up their children who were texting in the backseat, shopkeepers were preparing for the inevitable teenage invasion, and restaurants were just beginning to prepare for dinner service. When suddenly-- cell phones across the city started letting out only static and feedback instead of someone else's voice. Televisions followed suit, and then the landlines refused to allow a dial tone.
It wasn't just Rosethorne, of course. It was worldwide. But as the internet slowly stopped showing any new updates, and the communication lines of the world fell dead-- how would anyone know?
And then-- the Veil broke. After countless wars, suicides, deaths that happened before they should have, the afterlife system was overtaxed, and died. In doing so, all the countless ways that ghosts and souls can manifest in negative ways did, spiraling out of control.
In less than ten minutes, the swarm of the Veil swept across the planet. Some deaths were peaceful; a loved one reaching out to grasp them. Others were less so. Terribly less so, as the path of devestation across every town clearly displayed.
The Earth reeled from the shock of such an abrupt change. Reaching out in desperation, it grasped the edges of alternate dimensions and pulled in whoever it could reach. Help, it seemed to beg as it pulled them across, setting them together as best it could. Help me.
You're one of the lucky ones who was pulled in to help. Congratulations! You're armed with a communication stone and no knowledge of what you're doing-- I hope you manage alright. In addition, you may notice that your powers have now been nerfed to that of this world... and as such, things don't work as well as they used to. You may not even look the same as you used to.
Have fun! Don't get killed-- you'd only add to the chaos...
